It will soon be that time of year again where family and friends gather in the kitchen to celebrate the holidays.
Are you perhaps dreading having people over because your kitchen is small or outdated?
Would you like your kitchen to feel more like the “heart of the home” and less like a sad and cluttered space?
Sometimes what is required is a re-design to recreate the kitchen of your dreams.
But before you start planning a new kitchen it’s a good idea to consider the following 5 things:
Once you’re clear on all of the above you can start thinking of your kitchen’s layout.
Kitchens that maximize space don’t just happen. It all starts with a good layout. Whether you are remodeling an existing kitchen or building a new one, an efficient design takes into consideration the kitchen work triangle. The kitchen work triangle consists of the distance between the sink, refrigerator and cooktop.
U-shaped kitchens are very popular for example and are a great option for large families because of its multiple work spaces.
When designing your dream kitchen it is important to consider your storage space, along with countertop space. There are various cabinet designs for specific items such as pantry units, concealed dishwashers, push release cupboards and sliding doors that eliminate wasted space.
At Lux Country Living we can help you create the kitchen that best suits your lifestyle and meets your requirements.
What do you love (or hate) most about your kitchen? We would love to hear from you.
Do you own a Spruce Grove-area home with an unfinished basement and are desperate for some extra living space?
Have you always dreamed of having your own craft room? A room filled with filing cabinets and a custom made craft table or a man cave where you can escape from the chaos upstairs for a few hours to watch your favourite sport.
You’re in luck because all you need is some imagination and a plan to transform your versatile basement space into any of the following 7 basement renovation options:
It is very important to ensure that you plan your basement to match your true needs as it is the last space you can easily alter. Think about how you want the room to function and what elements are important to you. Then come up with a plan that makes maximum use out of the space you have.
At Lux Country Living we do a thorough evaluation to uncover those specific needs and we will design the space to satisfy them. Remember if you can imagine it then chances are we can build it for you!
A plan takes time, so let’s talk today.
Are you struggling to get a decent night’s sleep? A spate of studies has shown that there is a clear link between inadequate sleep and obesity, heart disease, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes. Furthermore sleep deprived people are generally unhappier because they have a harder time remembering positive ideas. The good news is, you can reverse the conditions of inadequate shut-eye by making a few adjustments to your bedroom environment!
Here are 5 ways to make your bedroom more sleep-friendly:
1. Buy a new mattress
First consider whether or not your current mattress is the right one. Are you waking up with lower back pain or general aches and pain? If so, a new mattress may be the solution you need.
Your mattress needs to support your body in a neutral position with your spine, heels, shoulders and head in proper alignment. A medium-to-firm mattress is a popular choice for people with back pain but the only way to truly find the right mattress is to try one out. Experts suggest testing the mattress in store but it is probably best to buy a mattress with a 30 day return policy so you can really test it out.
2. Choose the right bedding
A higher thread count doesn’t always mean quality and it certainly won’t guarantee a better nights' sleep. It is important that your bedding is achieving and sustaining the temperature you prefer to sleep in, some bedding has certain synthetics that keep you warm and toasty, others are meant to stay cool so you wake up refreshed.
3. Repaint in soothing colours
According to this article in sleep.org, people whose rooms are painted blue tend to sleep longer than those whose bedrooms are painted other colours because blue is associated with calmness and helps reduce blood pressure and heart rate. If blue isn’t your style click the color chart below to see what color suits your personality in conjunction with the overall feeling you want to achieve in your room.

4. Switch Off
Everyone has a different routine that helps them get ready for bed and settled in for the night. Unfortunately, for many that involves technology like smart phones and alarm clocks ; however, they emit a blue light which tricks your brain into lowering melatonin production levels preventing a soothing routine into relaxation. If you need an alarm clock to wake up then consider placing it as far away from your head as possible, also if you are brave enough, try a new routine for a week without technology. Do let us know if it helped.
5. Install blackout shades
The ideal bedroom environment should be dark, quiet and cool (ideally between 60-67 degrees). If you have light filtering into your bedroom through a window consider installing blackout shades. When you are exposed to light during the night your brain thinks it’s time to wake up.
On average, we spend a third of our day in bed so we at Lux Country Living believe it is important to ensure your bedroom is instilling the feeling you want to achieve and allowing you to get that perfect nights’ sleep. Try out these tips and do let us know if you have a special tip. We love comments!

Thinking of renovating? We would love to hear from you.
Planning is a critical component of construction, whether you’re planning a small home remodel or a new custom home. It is important to take your time and create a plan that makes sense!
Plan now so you can be ready in Spring!
For a home renovation a well-rounded plan should take 3-4 weeks. If you are making changes that require City approval, you may in some cases require an existing floor plan of what is currently there and you always require a new floor plan that indicates what you will be changing.
Not only will this make your City approval easier it will also allow contractors to price out your renovation accurately. Step by step you can identify what materials you'll require, how much material, and the associated labor cost. At that point you will be able to conclude if your renovation is within your budget, what you can change to align your project with your budget, or plan for the following year.
Ultimately, you will limit the unknowns by beginning your project in Spring. Saving you time and money!
For a custom new home, with so many factors in place, you should expect a planning phase between 2-6 months. The first step is a thorough evaluation of your current living situation and your ideal situation, for right now and in the future.
As you design the functionality of your home you want it to adapt with you and your family as you navigate new life stages. It is important to start taking notes, notes of what you love about your home and areas that frustrate you or your family members.
Observe the homes of your friends and family, start online idea books or create a vision board; every effort you make to identify what you truly need and want in your home will instill confidence in your design.
Once an evaluation has been completed, it is time to create your blueprint. Your blueprint includes the floor layouts of your home and 2D exterior images; this stage is where your ideas come to life, all your notes are turned into a reality. There are typically many revisions at this stage, this is where you want those revisions!
Depending on your contractor, you may get a 3D visual of your new home drawings, this is the best way to step inside and feel the home design.
Now for the fun part!
Next is your interior and exterior design selections; it is time to go shopping and pick out the aesthetics of your home. Take your time when looking, feel the material, pay attention to how those materials or products make you feel; is that how you want to feel in that particular room?
What emotions are you trying to evoke? Calm? Excitement? Warmth? Passion? Love?
When you are ready, your home will begin to take shape. It is important that you choose a contractor or home builder you can trust; it is a long term relationship with both ups and downs as construction is never perfect, but we promise you, we always strive for perfection!
Taking the time to plan your home renovation or new custom home is critical. It is important that going into the project you feel comfortable, able, and at ease. If you take the time to lull over your decisions and move forward when it feels right, it will be right.
Good luck on your journey!
